Configuring Dial-Up networking in Windows 98
- Install Your modem
Follow the instructions from the modem manufactuer
- Install Dial-up Networking
Check My Computer on your desktop for the Dial-up Networking folder. If it is not there then click START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab, Double Click COMMUNICATIONS, then check the Dial-up networking Box, then click ok, then OK again and follow instructions on the screen
- Install the TCP/IP protocol
START, Settings, Control Panel, Network. If the TCP/IP does not appear in the list of installed components, then add it by clicking the Add button, then choose, protocol, then click add again, then choose Microsoft on the left and TCP/IP on the right then click on OK
You will probably want the client for Microsoft Networks installed as well, if it is not in the list of installed components, then click Add, choose Client, then click Add, then choose Microsoft on the left and Client for Microsoft Networks on the right, then click OK, then OK again and follow instructions that appear on the screen (it will probably want your WIN-98 CD ROM and reboot)
- Create SWT connection icon
Open My Computer icon on your desktop, open Dial-up Networking Folder, Click Make new connection, Enter SWT for the name, and be sure and choose the correct modem (hopefully there is only one), click next
Enter the area code and phone number (512) 245-2800 and click next, then Finish
- Configure SWT connection icon by RIGHT clicking on it (i.e. use the right mouse button) and choose properties
Uncheck the Use area code if you can dial us as a local call
Click on the Configure... button, then on the Options tab and check Bring up terminal window AFTER dialing, then click OK
Click on Server types tab, uncheck netbeui and ipx/spx protocols and check TCP/IP
Then click the TCP/IP settings... button and enter the following information
- Get Script
You can now make a connection to the internet using the icon you just created and configured. Double click the SWT icon (in dial-up networking folder) and tell it to connect, wait for the post terminal dial-up window to come up, then hit return and it should prompt you for username, enter your kerberos username and hit return. you will be prompted for your KERBEROS password, enter it and hit return. A menu you will be displayed, enter a "3" followed by a return, then click on Continue
Now run Internet Explorer and go to the following web page http://www.cnss.swt.edu/win95/ppp/swt.scp and save it in C:\windows
Disconnect from the internet, right click on the swt icon and go to properties, click the Scripting Tab and enter C:\windows\swt.scp for the name of the script to use
Click on the General tab, then click on the Configure... Button, then click on the Options Tab and remove the check by Bring up terminal window after dialing, then click OK
You should now be able to double click the SWT icon and enter your KERBEROS username and password, then click CONNECT. The script should handle making the connection for you now!
