Computer and Network Support ServicesThe Sledge Hammer Approach
These instructions are to be used after following the Configuring Dial-Up Internet Access instructions and you fail to make a connection. Or the connection is unusuable (i.e. Failed DNS lookups, unknown host in FTP, can't TELNET to NYSSA.SWT.EDU) First double check all you settings on all the screens (especially the DNS settings!).
The Sledge Hammer Troubleshooters List
1. Double click on My Computer, Click on VIEW, then OPTIONS, then the View tab at the top. Now click on show all files Then Click on OK.. 2. Next click on START, FIND, Files, and specify *SOCK*.*. Now move all these files to a Floppy disk and delete them from your harddrive. <\TD> 3. Next go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, and click on the Add/Remove Software ICON. Click the Windows Setup tab at the top, then click on communications, then UNcheck the dial-up adapter. Then click on ok. Reboot if needed. <\TD> 4. Next go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, and click on the Network ICON, Make sure there are NO network components installed. Remove them if needed then click on OK. Reboot if needed. <\TD> 5. Follow the Windows-95 Configuring Dial-Up Internet Access instructions again. I.E. add the dial-up adapter, add/configure the tcp/ip protocol, Configure Dial-Up Networking. <\TD> 6. If it complains later about needing a file that isn't there. I first suggest you EXTRACT the file from the windows-95 cab files with the following command. "EXTRACT /A WIN95_03.CAB filename.ext", then copy the file to where it is supposed to be. The error message should tell you this. If this fails, then get the file off the diskette you used in step 1 above. <\TD> Go to the next section:
