How to setup MS TCP/IP printing

Note 1: You must logon to the NT machine with a valid VMS username or your job will NOT be printed!
Note 2: You must have an IP address that starts with 147.26. If you use an ISP other than SWT, then your jobs will NOT be printed.
First install the MS TCP/IP service (Note: Logon as an Administrator to set it up):

  1. Click START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL, then the NETWORK ICON, and finally click the SERVICES TAB

  2. Click on ADD, in the NETWORK SERVICE LIST, click MICROSOFT TCP/IP Printing, then CLOSE

  3. Be ready with your NT distribution files ("THE" CD), finally in the Network dialogue box, click OK and restart your computer.

To create an LPR-compatible printer:

  1. Click My Computer, then Printers, then click Add Printer, and finally then click Next.
  2. Choose Local printer
  3. Click Add Port.
  4. Click LPR Port, and then click OK.
  5. If LPR Port is not available, install the Microsoft TCP/IP Printing service. See above.
  6. In Name or address of server providing lpd, type one of the following DNS names for the vms print queue printer you are adding.
    nyssa.swt.edu
    tegan.swt.edu
    peri.swt.edu
    leela.swt.edu
  7. In Name of printer or print queue on that server, type the VMS name of the printer as it is identified by the command
    $ show queue print*
    and then click OK.
  8. Use NYSSA.SWT.EDU as the HOST
  9. Use a valid VMS Queue name (Do $ SHOW QUEUE on the vms cluster for a full list of names)
  10. Below is a list of the more common queues used. If you need the print driver for the printer, simply click on the printer name
    VMS queue name Printer Type/Properties
MCS_DRILLED Digital print server 32 plus Duplex (both sides) with holes
MCS_LETTER Digital print server 32 plus Simplex (1 side)
MCS_LETTER_DUPLEX Digital print server 32 plus Duplex (2 sides)
JCK_DRILLED Digital print server 32 plus Duplex (2 sides) with holes
JCK_LETTER Digital print server 32 plus Simplex (1 sides)
JCK_LETTER_DUPLEX Digital print server 32 plus Duplex (2 sides)

  11. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing the LPR-compatible printer.

The Name or address of server providing lpd can be the DNS name or IP address of the direct-connect TCP/IP printing device or the UNIX computer to which the printing device is connected. The DNS name can be the name specified for the host in the HOSTS file.

A network-connected printer must have a card that supports LPD for TCP/IP printing to work properly. The computer where you create the LPR-compatible printer must have the TCP/IP protocol and the Microsoft TCP/IP Printing service installed. LPR stands for Line Printing utility, and LPD stands for Line Printing Daemon, which is how these elements are known on UNIX.
