Mapping Drives to a Windows NT Server

This last set of steps is only necessary if you wish to connect to a Windows NT File Server such as the College of Commerce File Server's Excalibur, Excelsior and Webfoot.

You must create or add to your LMHOSTS and HOSTS files two entries. Microsoft provides two sample files for you called LMHOSTS.SAM and HOSTS.SAM which you should use as templates if you are creating these two files for the first time.

Locate the files LMHOSTS.SAM and HOSTS.SAM in your C:\Windows directory. Make copies of them to LMHOSTS and HOSTS. Start up an editor such as NOTEPAD.EXE (located on your START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES menu.

To the bottom of the file LMHOSTS add the following entries:

128.233.32.230 Webfoot #PRE #DOM:SCHOONER

128.233.32.193 Excalibur #PRE #DOM:SCHOONER

128.233.32.196 Excelsior #PRE #DOM:SCHOONER

128.233.32.88 Intrepid #PRE #DOM:SCHOONER

To the bottom of the file HOSTS add the following entries:

128.233.32.230 Webfoot.usask.ca

128.233.32.193 Excalibur.usask.ca

128.233.32.196 Excelsior.usask.ca

128.233.32.200 Lighthouse.usask.ca

128.233.32.88 Intrepid.usask.ca

Save both these files. Note that the files may get saved as LMHOSTS.TXT and HOSTS.TXT. That won't work and you may need to rename those files such that they don't have the TXT extension.

To ensure proper loading of these files you should shut down and restart after the addition of these lines. Alternatively, you can start a Dos command prompt and enter:

nbtstat -R (it must be a capital R)

Once these lines are in the files then you should be easily able to map drives to the listed servers. To map a your home directory drive Right Click on the Network Neighborhood icon and in the space listed enter a connection to drive H: on \\excalibur\youraccountname$.

To connect to the drive containing your webpage you must enter:

Then you must go into the explorer and select your S: drive (or whatever drive you connected to) then the faculty, staff or students directory followed by your login account name ID (lastname for faculty and staff or three letter three number name for students).
